About My Work

My work grows out of my childhood fascination with maps, ancient ruins and lost treasures, geological formations, the stars and planets, and from a more mature interest in cosmology, faith and spirituality.

My work explores the creation of the universe, from the very large to the very small, from the cosmic to the microscopic and subatomic. My work reenacts cosmological, geological, chemical, physical, biological processes; the passage of time; memory; and destruction and deterioration.

As I work, surfaces are scraped and distressed, colors are allowed to blend, metal pigments and metal leaf allowed to oxidize, materials to react, finishes to crust over or peel. It is often not planned and rarely completely within my control.

Sometimes viewers will see a work of mine and ask, “Where’s the top?” “There’s no top or bottom,” is my usual response. There is no up or down in space. Notice how flat pieces bleed off the edges into space. When I hang a painting, I orient it as the room suggests. I rarely sign pieces on their face, since viewers will want to infer a top or bottom.
